Product Overview

The GREEF New Energy GDG series features a disc-type permanent magnet generator that operates without an iron core. This innovative design consists of a spindle and rotor arranged in a disc shape, where the stator is fixed in the center and the rotor rotates on both sides. Notably, the spindle contains only windings and completely lacks an iron core.

Both the stator and rotor are constructed as flat disc structures utilizing axial air gap magnetic flux. They are alternately positioned along the axial direction, which contributes to the generator's unique performance characteristics. Thanks to its short axial length combined with a large diameter, the disc generator can easily accommodate a multi-pole configuration.

This generator design boasts several advantages, including a high power-to-mass ratio, low rated speed, the ability to start at low wind speeds, compact size, reduced energy consumption, lightweight construction, and high efficiency. These features make it an excellent choice for direct-drive vertical axis wind turbines, particularly because of its minimal wind resistance caused by the rotor mounted on the vertical axis.

The GDG series disc-type permanent magnet generators come in two variants: outer rotor and inner rotor types. In the outer rotor design, the shaft does not rotate the casing, and the cable is routed through the center of the shaft. Conversely, in the inner rotor variant, the casing remains stationary while the shaft rotates, with the cable routed outside the casing.

“I built a small pico hydro system on the creek behind my off-grid cabin. The water head is only 3 meters and flow rate around 0.2 m³/s – too low for most generators. This axial flux coreless unit starts generating usable power at just 150 RPM. No cogging, no iron loss, and it’s silent. I’m getting 300-400W continuously, 24/7. My old induction generator would barely light an LED at that speed. Absolutely perfect for low-head hydro.”
